‘‘Shedding light on truth”

Our long-running edutainment program fighting polarization in Burundi.

BURUNDI

The Burundian radio drama “Murikira Ukuri”, Kirundi for “shedding light on truth” focuses on the different elements that lead to group violence.

IIn the fictional village of Rusangi, two ethnic groups coexist: the Baseruko from the East, and the Barengero from the West. Long ago, the Baseruko left the barren hills of the East in search of fertile farming land in the West. This migration sparked a struggle over land that would divide the two communities for decades. The Barengero, the original inhabitants of the area, came to see the Baseruko as invaders — a wound that never fully healed.

When an unexpected discovery challenges everything they thought they knew, a group of young people from both sides decides to act. Through social media, they launch a campaign called "Murika" — shed light — demanding the truth be brought to the surface. Their goal: to learn from the past and build a better future together. But will they succeed when people involved in past atrocities see their campaign as a threat?
