DRC / Grass roots
Twelve mixed listener groups, including five groups of youngsters, have been active since the start of Radio Benevolencija's radio transmissions in the DRC. These groups are culturally and ethnically mixed and make it possible for Radio Benevolencija to get to know its listeners' points of view on the messages conveyed through the programs. Participants come together each month and discuss the form and content of the programs, formulating criticism on their cultural and educational qualities and evaluating their entertainment value. The organizer of each group takes notes and sends a monthly report to Radio Benevolencija's production team, which then strives to integrate the recommendations of the listeners in future programs.
Listener groups are encouraged to set up an activity they will collaborate on. Instead of remunerating the participants monthly, Radio Benevolencija encourages them to invest their allowances in a joint project that they define and direct themselves. This encourages the participants of different cultural and ethnic groups to work together and set collective goals. Some groups set up shelters, others organize support funds for victims of sexual violence and more. On the basis of these listener groups, Radio Benevolencija can evaluate the ability of groups to lay down long-term goals and to work together.
