DRC / Factual & debate

The objectives of Okapi Action are to counteract the factors and influences that lead to group violence and promote inclusive leadership. In this vain, the program:

  1. Informs and sensitizes Congolese opinion leaders and decisions makers on the factors and influences that lead to violence between groups in order to prevent more violence;

  2. Informs and sensitizes the targeted population on diagnosing, accepting and healing trauma;

  3. Encourages opinion leaders and decision makers to develop visionary and inclusive leadership;

  4. Encourages the targeted population to deconstruct hate speech and propaganda

Okapi Action is a 30-minute program that introduces each topic by means of a three to five-minute report. It is produced domestically to enable coverage of all group violence in the DRC. The program includes questions sent by text message and live responses by Radio Benevolencija experts. To guide its experts, Radio Benevolencija has prepared a list of key messages to be used in the formulation of responses. The program is produced in French, the language used by most decision makers and opinion leaders.

Radio Benevolencija provided training to local experts by means of a workshop in Kinshasa , during which professors of psychology and sociology where invited to debate on the psychological roots of violence and inclusive leadership. At the end of the workshop, three professors were invited to contribute regularly during broadcasts of Okapi Action . Strategically, Radio Benevolencija believes that allowing the Congolese elite to convey the messages is more effective than having expats do it, as they have a better understanding of local culture and the historical/political context. They are also more adept at giving practical advice that is culturally acceptable and adequate.

In addition, a four-minute summary of Okapi Action is aired on the shortwave services of Radio Okapi every Friday nationwide in four local languages. This allows militias stationed in hard-to-reach places to tune in as well.
