Media for reconciliation: a success story in Rwanda?

The media in general and radio in particular has widely been mentioned as the best pro-poor development communication tool in African countries. Because of its nature of "speaking in local languages" and its capacity to cover large areas and cross geographical borders, radio has also been used for pro-peace campaigns as an instrument for reconciliation, peace building and prevention of further conflicts.

The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission and La Benevolencija Rwanda are organising a conference titled "Media for Reconciliation: A Success Story in Rwanda?" on the role that media played and still needs to play in building a peaceful post-conflict society. This one day conference will look at the current media landscape, how it has evolved and how a combination of state-owned and private media house manage to achieve their important role in fostering a culture of stability, security, and peace.

Date: 13th September 2007
